La Juiceria Superfoods, Verve Shops, Mont Kiara

Recently we have been indulging in lots of pre-Ramadan food to compile my "2017 Ramadan List". Eating food is what we at GoodyFoodies do best. Having said that, life is all about balance. La Juiceria invited us over to their Verve Shops, Mont Kiara outlet and the timing was perfect. We were more than willing to swap rendang and lemang to sample a few healthy options from the purveyors of superfoods.

Healthy eating need not be boring.  The menu at La Juiceria Superfoods comprises of All-day breakfast, Soups, Soba, Wraps & Pastas, Superbowls, Signature salads, as well as Build your own salad bowl. There will also be Smoothie bowls, their signature Cold-pressed juices, organic coffee, premium tea, and raw desserts.

I had the Beet Aid, which was really nice - great for increasing stamina and improving blood flow

My personal favorite is the Teriyaki Chicken Soba (RM18.90), a tasty bowl of charcoal soba noodles topped with tender and flavourful strips of teriyaki chicken, a runny kampung egg, seaweed and shoyu sesame dressing. Umami goodness in a bowl. I wouldn't mind eating this everyday.

Another must-try here is the Nasi Lemak Wrap (RM21.90), a healthy version of Malaysia's national dish. Instead of rice cooked in coconut milk, it is replaced with quinoa, and served alongside other "nasi lemak" condiments such as ikan bilis, peanuts, Japanese cucumber, kampung egg, and sambal as well as juicy grilled chicken thigh. Very enjoyable, and we both thought the tastes and flavours were pretty spot on and similar to nasi lemak.

For something light, you can try the Truffle Mushroom Soup (RM10.90), served with baguette.

The Superbowls are packed with healthy, nutritious ingredients. For instance, the Buddha Bowl (RM18.90) that we had comes with brown rice topped with roasted pumpkin, bell peppers, tofu, grilled mushrooms, French bean, pumpkin seeds, alfafa sprouts, caramelised cashew brittles, tortilla chips, and a Thai coconut red curry dressing which brings all the ingredients together nicely. Again, this was delicious and lots of nice textures in this one.

I never thought I'd say this, but you must definitely leave some room for the raw desserts from The Honest Treat. I've had some not-so-nice raw desserts in the past, but these were lovely. These raw desserts are free from dairy, egg, gluten and refined sugar. We adored the Banoffee (RM14.90) and Minty Chocolate (RM14.90).

End your meal with a cup of organic coffee - Hubby went for the Vatte (RM11), made using La Juiceria's Almond Mylk with double shot espresso... very nice and creamy. The coffees also come with a shot of chlorophyll water, which is said to energize and improve blood circulation.

For non-coffee drinkers, there is also tea... I had the Premium Chai Latte (RM14) which is handcrafted with fresh spices, and La Juiceria Almond Mylk.

Buka puasa at La Juiceria Superfoods Verve Shops, spend a minimum of RM50 in a single receipt (on food only) and get a FREE Pittaya Bowl. T&Cs apply.

Peter's Pork Noodles + Brickfields Pisang Goreng, KL

I was never big on pork noodles until I discovered Machi, and now we have it at least once every week. Whenever we ask our friends where their favorite pork noodles place is, the answer we often hear is "Peter's Pork Noodles".

There are two Peter's Pork Noodles stall in Brickfields. The original stall is located in Money's Corner Food Court (across the road from Nu Sentral). There is also another Peter’s Pork Noodles stall at the nearby Restoran One Sentral (oppositeWisma YMCA), run by the founder’s son.

We visited the original stall recently with a friend. It can get super busy during lunch hours, so best avoid the peak hour if you can... come either before 11.30am or after 2pm. Grab a table, take note of the table note and head over to the stall to place your order.

You can choose to have dry noodles or noodles in soup, as well as specify whether you want extra egg as well as the spare parts (intestines, liver etc). We went for the small portion (RM6), which is a good ladies portion - so if you're a big eater, do opt for the large portion for an extra RM0.50.

I chose meehoon as my noodle option, while Hubby had the dry lou shi fun (rat's tail noodles). We read in an article that the broth is made by boiling pork bones for one hour, and then left to simmer. The broth here is clearer than Machi, with an additional ingredient - tung choy 冬菜(a type of preserved vegetable), giving the soup a unique, appetizing flavour. As we opted for no spare parts, our bowl of noodles came with minced pork, and sliced pork only, as well as some choy sum and chee yau char (lard fritters).

We had no complaints about the pork noodle here - we enjoyed it, though I have to say I prefer Machi's more robust soup and the location is more convenient for us as well.

Opening times: 7am to 4pm daily. Closed on alternate Mondays.

Location: Peter's Pork Noodles, Money’s Corner Food Court, 7, Jalan Vivekananda, Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. (You can park in Nu Sentral mall and walk over or alternatively in the open-air car park (RM4 per hour) directly outside the food court)

GPS Coordinates: 3.131179, 101.686839

*****

After pork noodles, we walked down the street to the famous Brickfields Pisang Goreng (located opposite Wisma YMCA on Jalan Thambipillay and outside the other Peter's Pork Noodles place) to get some banana fritters.

They had just ran out of pisang goreng, so we had to wait for 15 minutes for a new batch. They use pisang raja here, instead of pisang mas, hence they're larger than usual. We noticed that they use overripe bananas, which attributes to the sweetness of the bananas. Definitely worth the wait, the batter was light and crispy, and stayed crispy even when we tapau-ed it all the way home.

Price list

We couldn't resist getting the bola bijan (sesame balls with red bean paste filling) (RM1.40 per piece) and we loved the sticky chewy texture and generous filling. You must also try the kuih bakul (RM1.40 per piece), aka nian gao (glutinous rice cake that you usually get during CNY) that is sandwiched with sweet potato and deep fried. This was my favorite item from this stall.

And since we're already here, we might as well try the curry puff as well (RM1.60). Glad we did - so flaky and yummy! I'm only glad this is not a convenient location for us, otherwise our waistline will never stop expanding :P

Opening times: 12pm to 5pm.

Location: 19, Jalan Thambipillay, Brickfields, 50470 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

Tel: 012-617 2511

Festive Celebration @ The Snug, Hotel Stripes KL

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my Muslim readers and friends a blessed Ramadan.

*************

On the first day of Ramadan, we were invited to Hotel Stripes KL's first ever Festive Celebration, held in The Snug on Level 2 of the hotel. The Festival Celebration buffet spread will be held daily from 27 May to 23 June 2017, from 7pm to 10pm and is priced at RM80 nett per person.

The festive spread will feature various traditional Malay cuisine, as well as specialties from their neighbourhood friends in the Kamunting neighborhood which dates back over two decades. Some of the specialties include Capitol Cafe's beef rendang, assam pedas, and gulai ayam, Abu's pasembor and mee rebus, MMZ's sup kambing, sup ayam and murtabak kambing, and Cowboy's mee mamak.

Tender, chunky beef rendang

Love the tangy assam pedas fish..makes me wanna drink all that gravy!

The sup ayam is another favorite of mine... flavorful and well-spiced :)

Other Malay dishes you will find on the buffet spread are ulam-ulaman, satay, lemang, rojak buah, paru goreng berlada, udang galah masak sambal petai (freshwater prawn with stink bean), pahjeri nenas berempah, roasted lamb, whole roasted fish, nasi biryani with lamb chops and puyuh goreng (fried quail). The spread here may not be huge, but they're all well-executed and tasty.

This Udang galah dish is da bomb!

For desserts, not to be missed is the thin, crispy appam balik. Instead of the regular peanut and creamed corn filling, the version at Stripes will include Nestum and creamed corn. Eat it on its own, or with some vanilla ice cream. ;)

There will also be ais kacang, local kuihs, fresh tropical fruits, Western pastries and ice cream.

Location: The Snug, Level 2, Hotel Stripes KL, 25 Jalan Kamunting, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. (Valet parking available for RM20)
